Our young family moved to the Isle of Man 27 years ago. My wife and I enjoy a great work-life balance on our beautiful UNESCO Biosphere island. Our children have all had an excellent education up to 'A-level'.
On our island, teenagers who aspire to go to university have a limited choice of academic qualifications that can be undertaken on the island. As a result most travel off-island to study; mainly in the UK or Ireland. For some it's even further afield.
Having attained their qualifications most graduates, due to the limited employment opportunities on the Isle of Man, remain in their off-island location. This reduces our island population, reduces our talent pipeline and impacts our economy.

Teenagers who would like to remain to study and work on the island can be part of the solution to increase our island population, increase our talent pipeline and grow our economy.
The challenge for Government and island residents is to find a way of creating more diverse education and employment opportunities; so that our teenagers can see a great future on the island, choose to remain here and make it home.
Together we need to diversify and grow our island economy to create alternative means of education delivery with an increased and varied range of highly skilled and rewarding careers opportunities on the island.

I've created IslenomiX to promote inward investment that aligns with the Isle of Man Government initiatives, targeting emerging sectors in our economy; without displacing existing island businesses.
IslenomiX seeks to attract start-up or expanding SME businesses; initially in emerging sectors such as knowledge, digital, green-tech, agri-tech and bio-pharma.
IslenomiX aims to help to grow these new businesses and our island economy together.

The Isle of Man is an internationally respected, well-regulated and stable place of business. Moody's has rated the island's economic strength as 'a3'; which reflects 'a robust record of economic growth and high income levels.' In the decade up to the early 2020s the island economy grew by an average of 2.5% annually, and in 2022 the Government recorded a GDP of approximately £5.6 Bn.
The island has just won 'The Best International Financial Centre' at the Investment International Awards 2024.
Whilst the economy is more diverse than those of comparable jurisdictions the top 5 largest sectors account for approximately 60% of GDP and the economy consists almost entirely of service sectors.
Growth in the economy has been mainly due to the e-Gaming and Insurance sectors which now accounts for approximately a quarter of GDP.
With the lack of diversity in depth across many sectors in the island economy there are opportunities on the island for growth in new globally emerging sectors.

The Isle of Man Government recognises it is essential to grow the economy, and has tasked the Department for Enterprise to deliver a strategy for deeper diversification.
This strategy is set in an already attractive tax-neutral environment for operating a business. Corporation Tax on the island is zero rated, and there is neither Capital Gains Tax nor Inheritance Tax. Businesses operate in a safe and stable, well-regulated jurisdiction.
Part of the Government strategy is to attract new or expanding businesses and their people to the island. To do this they have introduced financial incentives, assistance and training; realised through a series of grants, relocation cost support, business costs support, tax relief incentives for key workers and ongoing training support.
Their aim is to diversify and deepen the sectors in the economy and simultaneously grow the island population.

I have experience of setting up and operating SMEs on the Isle of Man and in the UK. I have been a business founder, owner and director in the Isle of Man for 25 years; gaining valuable experience from setting up a company with Companies Registry to the company requirements including the submission of annual returns.
During this time I have worked with central and local Government, international and local businesses. My businesses have operated within the statutory and regulatory environment of their sector in both the Isle of Man and the UK. Having relocated to the Isle of Man, I have experience of the island transitional requirements before, during and after the move here.
I have appeared before Government committees on my industry sector matters, and continue to attend Government user group sessions. I have established excellent contacts within Government and the local business community.

My most recent start-up experience was between 2017 and 2020 where I was a co-founder, co-owner and director of a small UK fintech company. The company objective was to create a debt management and financial learning service to retail banks for their financially distressed customers.
My tasks within the business included:
researching our sector in the UK and Ireland markets
creating lead generation and databases
creating a route to market
liaison with the UK FCA to test our Proof-of-Concept in their Sandbox platform
working with advisors and setting up company policy documents for compliance with the FCA regulations for debt management
B2B meetings with potential investors and stakeholders
As a Director of this business I was required to undertake appropriate training and qualifications so I now have personal insolvency practitioner qualifications PIP1 and PIP2.

I can use my 25 years business experience here, combined with my Government and island business contacts to provide you with the information you require to ensure the Isle of Man is the best place for you to start or expand your business.
So that you have a better understanding of operating your business on the island, I can provide you with a collation of the available information for the sector in which you wish to operate, setting out market size, market leaders, regulatory requirements and business opportunities.
Also I can consult with Government and ascertain on your behalf the financial assistance and ongoing support that may be available should you start or expand your business on the Isle of Man.
Should you then wish to explore your options in more detail, we can organise a guided visit to the island and make arrangements for you to meet principals in Government, sector market leaders, and island businesses and organisations whom you may require to provide support to your enterprise.
